Abstract
The study examines availability, and utilization of school library resources and its impacts on the academic excellence in secondary school libraries in Edo state. The descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 2162 senior secondary school students from Idia Girls’ College, Boiling Point Academy and UNIBEN Demonstration Secondary School. The sampling techniques used for the study was Random Sampling Technique, a total of 216 respondents was used as the sample size representing 10% of the total population. A well structured questionnaire was designed and distributed to respondents .A total of 216 copies of questionnaire were administered and 210 copies were duly completed, returned and found useable for this study, this represents 97% response rate of the sample population. The data collected were analysed using frequency and percentage. The findings of the study show that there is poor availability and utilization of school library resources in the selected secondary schools in Edo state. It was also revealed in the study that there is absence of adequate and current materials, lack of funds, and lack of audio-visuals, amongst others. These are factors that have contributed to the poor level of availability and utilization of the school libraries resources. Recommendations were made such as; school libraries should provide trained professional librarians to man its operations, current and relevant materials should be provided in the school libraries, there should also be provision of adequate funds to acquire necessary materials and technology in the school libraries amongst others.
