Abstract
This study focused on the Evaluation of School Library Resources, Availability and Usage among Female Students in Senior Secondary in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised 1,137 female senior secondary school students from two selected secondary schools, while a sample of 240 respondents was selected using stratified random sampling technique. A total of 232 copies of the questionnaire were properly completed and returned. Data collected were analysed using frequency counts and simple percentages. The findings of the study revealed that school libraries in the study area are mainly equipped with basic print resources such as textbooks, reference materials, and novels, while modern resources like computers, internet facilities, and audio-visual materials are inadequately available. The study further showed that usage of school library resources among female students is generally low, with most respondents indicating occasional use, although a smaller proportion reported daily use. It was also found that students primarily use the library for academic purposes such as assignments and examination preparation, while recreational and developmental use of library resources is minimal. In addition, several challenges were identified, including limited opening hours, inadequate digital resources, poor organisation of materials, and insufficient study spaces. Based on the findings, the study recommends that school libraries should enhance the provision of digital resources such as e-books, online databases, and internet-enabled computers. Library operating hours should be extended to improve accessibility, especially during examination periods. School libraries should ensure proper organisation and classification of materials to enhance easy access and use. Adequate and conducive study spaces should be provided to support effective learning and Qualified library personnel should be employed to guide students in the effective use of library resources.
