Abstract

This study examined job satisfaction among university librarians in Southwest Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design of the correlational type was adopted for the study. The population comprised university librarians in public and private universities in Southwest Nigeria, while a sample of 180 librarians was drawn from six selected universities using a multi-stage sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Job Satisfaction among University Librarians Questionnaire (JSULQ),” which was validated through face and content validation by experts in Library and Information Science and Educational Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach’s Alpha, yielding a coefficient of 0.82. Data were collected through direct administration and analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (multiple regression analysis) at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that university librarians were generally satisfied with their work environment, job security, professional development, recognition, and workload distribution, but were dissatisfied with remuneration and promotion opportunities. The study further showed that work environment, professional development, job security, leadership support, and working conditions influenced job satisfaction, while remuneration and promotion opportunities were not significant influencing factors. In addition, inadequate remuneration, poor promotion structure, heavy workload, inadequate funding, poor working conditions, limited professional development, and inadequate staffing were identified as major challenges affecting job satisfaction. The study concluded that job satisfaction among university librarians is largely determined by organizational and environmental factors rather than demographic characteristics. It was therefore recommended that university management should improve remuneration, promotion structures, working conditions, funding, staffing, and professional development opportunities in order to enhance job satisfaction and improve job performance among university librarians in Southwest Nigeria.
