Abstract

This interview with Erik Leiva was conducted by Sukanya Chakrabarti as part of the Mosaic Atlas project. Erik Leiva, of Nicaraguan/Central American descent, founded Chavalos de Aqui y Alla to promote Nicaraguan culture and represent the Central American community in the San Francisco Bay Area. Initially starting by sharing cultural content online, the organization has expanded to host events, performances, and humanitarian projects, such as an annual holiday basket distribution in Nicaragua. Despite challenges typical for arts organizations, like funding and space for rehearsals and performances, it has formed partnerships with other nonprofits to better serve the community. Operating primarily in San Francisco and occasionally in neighboring cities, the organization aims to share authentic Nicaraguan culture, particularly with younger generations. As part of the Mosaic Atlas project, Mosaic Staff and Volunteers, SJSU students and faculty from the Anthropology and Film, Theater, and Dance Departments interviewed people who support and produce art throughout the Bay Area.
