Abstract
This interview with Armando Castellano was conducted by Sukanya Chakrabarti as part of the Mosaic Atlas project. Armando Castellano, a Latino artist, musician, and cultural advocate, explores his identity, work, challenges, and aspirations. Armando discusses how his cultural identity as a Latino informs his artistry, including his focus on classical music featuring Latino composers and mentoring a diverse ensemble. He reflects on the challenges of navigating predominantly Eurocentric and white systems in classical music as a person of color, addressing the systemic obstacles faced by BIPOC artists. His work involves creating art that resonates with and represents Latino communities, often highlighting underrepresented voices and stories through music and collaborative projects. Armando shares the difficulties of running his organization, including fundraising, managing staff, and balancing artistic and administrative responsibilities. He critiques the extractive nature of philanthropy, calling for more equitable practices in funding, particularly for organizations led by and serving marginalized communities. The interview emphasizes the importance of engaging with and tailoring art for specific communities, ensuring cultural authenticity and empowerment. As part of the Mosaic Atlas project, Mosaic Staff and Volunteers, SJSU students and faculty from the Anthropology and Film, Theater, and Dance Departments interviewed people who support and produce art throughout the Bay Area.
