Abstract

This interview with Elyssa Moreno, a Mexican American bisexual poet and photographer, documents her creative journey that centers on the "unlearning" of shame and the reclamation of cultural identity. Moreno utilizes poetry as a transformative tool for personal healing, specifically addressing the intersection of her Mexican heritage and her sexuality. While Moreno acknowledges the growth of LGBTQ+ spaces in Santa Clara County, she critiques the lack of consistent, year-round programming that authentically centers BIPoC communities. As part of the Mosaic Atlas project, Mosaic Staff and Volunteers, SJSU students, and faculty from the Anthropology and Film, Theater, and Dance Departments interviewed people who support and produce art throughout the Bay Area.
