Abstract
This interview with Jeffrey Thomas, who define themself as a "trash artist," details their artistic philosophy with the reclamation of discarded waste as a medium for processing personal and collective trauma. By transforming "worthless" objects, Thomas' work becomes a ritual of healing and meditation. The narrative highlights significant structural barriers, including the challenges of practicing art while unhoused and the reliance on unconventional safe spaces. As part of the Mosaic Atlas project, Mosaic Staff and Volunteers, SJSU students, and faculty from the Anthropology and Film, Theater, and Dance Departments interviewed people who support and produce art throughout the Bay Area.
