Abstract
This interview with Ash Frandsen, Peer Outreach Specialist with the ColleQTIve program, highlights The Q Corner as a vital Safe Space and hub that bridges between clinical mental health services and community-based sanctuary. Frandsen describes the program as a direct response to the lack of LGBTQ+ individuals who often avoid mental health services due to a lack of affirmation in traditional medical settings. The Q Corner functions as an art hub that is utilized as a visual cue for safety. Massive mural projects allow artists to challenge social norms in the art world by insisting on the representation of diverse body sizes, ethnicities, and gender expressions. Ultimately, the Q Corner is framed as an evolving ecosystem that prioritizes joy and diversity, aiming to transform the broader landscape of Santa Clara County through rigorous training and the visible reclamation of institutional space. As part of the Mosaic Atlas project, Mosaic Staff and Volunteers, SJSU students, and faculty from the Anthropology and Film, Theater, and Dance Departments interviewed people who support and produce art throughout the Bay Area.
