Abstract

Staff development is a relatively new addition to the traditional responsibilities of managers. Managers have always been concerned about production and quality of product but not so formally about staff development responsibilities. Library workers themselves did not have all of the expectations about being developed on the job. The workshop theme also touches on such issues as the professional role, collective bargaining, and the effects of new and rapid developments in library technology upon management.

Comments

The papers were presented on June 8, 1979, at the Northern Workshop on Management and Staff Development of the Chapter of Academic and Research Librarians (an independent chapter of the California Library Association).
