Personal Commentary
Supplementing the information above, my family moved from Alameda to the West Valley shortly before World War II. I attended both Alameda and Los Gatos High Schools. The house my parents built in 1948, in what is now Saratoga, is still my home.
I entered Stanford in 1940, but Army service, in Europe, in an infantry division, delayed my graduation.
Outside of the Political Science Department, the Academic Senate has been my major interest at San Jose State. I was a member off and on for some 25 years. I served twice as its chair and chair of a number of its committees. In 1993, I was awarded the title of Honorary Senator.
In the area of public service, I was a member of the Saratoga City Planning Commission for nearly eight years, most of that time as its chairman.
After full retirement, in appreciation of 35 years of congenial association with my colleagues in the department, I founded the Political Science Faculty Endowment. Its purpose is to support faculty activities and professional development.
Life memberships include the Nature Conservancy, the Medieval Academy and the Stanford Alumni Association. Among local memberships are the Saratoga Mens Club, Montalvo Association and the SJS Emeritus Faculty Association.
