Abstract
This project describes the process of implementing an automated order processing system for a small manufacturing company which started out with no standard business processes. In deciding the required features and the design path for the system, special emphasis is placed on the following topics:
- Understanding why it is crucial for a small manufacturer to pay particular attention to improving its information flow.
- Understanding the nature of the business, the company’s relations with customers and vendors, and its products.
- Prototyping the eventual automated system using a “paper trail” approach.
- Why choosing to develop the system with in house talents in often the best path.
The actual design of the system is implemented using a stand alone relational database application. Tables, forms, and reports for the system are presented. Issues involved in the test phase are discussed along with success measures of the system implementation.
