Abstract
The Software Metrics Analysis Tool is a set of Microsoft Excel files to help the
software project manager in the daily management of a software project. The
metrics have been selected based on the availability from current measures,
and their significance to the software development process. Five main areas of
measurements are taken: financial cost data (labor hours and dollars), schedule
(milestone) data, size (lines-of-code) data, inspection data, and error (Software
Problem/Change Report) data. This tool will help the software manager in the
analysis of these metrics and to provide insight into the software process and
possible problem areas. Through the use of this tool, reports and profiles will
help in the analysis of the effectiveness of inspections, how effective the testing
is at finding problems, when testing is complete, whether the project is on
schedule and within budget, when the project should be replanned, and the
accuracy of the size estimation. This tool should be considered a starting point
for the collection and analysis of a software project's metrics, leading to process
improvements, as software engineering strives to become an accepted
engineering discipline.
