Abstract
The Ethernet Switching Host Simulator (EshSim) is a C++ program running on Solaris workstation with an XView-Open windows user interface. It simulates the software features of the Ethernet Switching Host (ESH) hardware and will be used to test the Ethernet Switching Host Manager (EshMgr) software during development until the ESH hardware becomes available.
EshSim has Ethernet to Asynchronous transfer mode Interface Controller (ENIAC) registers which are setup with specific Virtual Circuit Identifiers (VCI). EshSim generates ethernet packets from the user interface and uses VCIs to send the packets. Depending on the Content Accessible Memory (CAM) setup of the packet's source and destination addresses, a VCI is obtained either from the CAM entry of the destination address or from the ENIAC registers. If the VCI is obtained from the CAM entry of the destination address, it implies a connection already exists between source and destination stations. In the above case EshSim sends the packet to the destination station. Otherwise the packet is sent to the EshMgr which triggers a series of actions to setup a connection between the source station and the destination station.
