Abstract

This interview with Annalee Mraz Bartra was conducted by Sukanya Chakrabarti as part of the Mosaic Atlas project. Annalee Mraz Bartra, a Mexican-born visual sociologist, artist, and advocate, explores the intersection of art, culture, and social equity. Rooted in her Mexican and Catalan heritage, her multidisciplinary practice encompasses visual arts, sociology, dance, and writing. Annalee's work is deeply informed by her academic pursuits, including a Ph.D. focusing on visual sociology, and her lived experiences as part of the Latinx community. Through her roles in organizations like Casa Circulo Cultural and Peninsula 360 Press, she amplifies marginalized voices and creates platforms for underserved communities, particularly migrant Latinx families. Annalee sees art as a transformative tool for personal and collective expression, emphasizing its social, cultural, and therapeutic functions. She highlights the inequities in resource distribution within the art and nonprofit sectors, advocating for equitable support for minority communities and their creative endeavors. Her work and advocacy focus on making art accessible and fostering resilience while challenging systemic barriers. Through storytelling, education, and collaborative initiatives, Annalee champions art as a vehicle for societal connection, cultural preservation, and justice. As part of the Mosaic Atlas project, Mosaic Staff and Volunteers, SJSU students and faculty from the Anthropology and Film, Theater, and Dance Departments interviewed people who support and produce art throughout the Bay Area.
