Personal Commentary
Dr. Laurie Drabble, PhD, MSW, MPH is a Professor in the School of Social Work and Director of the Center for Applied Research in Human Services Faculty at San José State University, College of Health and Human Sciences. She is also an Affiliate Scientist with the Alcohol Research Group in Emeryville, CA and, in this role, has coordinated a team of researchers and consultants in conducting pioneering research on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among sexual minority populations using data from the National Alcohol Survey (NAS). She and her team have conducted qualitative and epidemiological research on mediators and moderators of alcohol and drug problems among sexual minority women (SMW), examined strategies for oversampling SMW, and documented the impact of policies on substance use and health outcomes among SMW. In addition to her NIH funded research. Dr. Drabble has a strong background in community-engaged research, partnering with state and local organizations.
Dr. Drabble also has extensive experience in advancing prevention and treatment services for women and sexual minority women through advocacy, leadership development, and training with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and grassroots community groups. Past roles included serving as Executive Director of the California Women’s Commission on Alcohol and Drug Dependencies; Chair of the Women’s Health Council, California Department of Health Services; and consultant/co-facilitator for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender workgroup. She has mentored new leaders both within the university and for state and national leadership programs, including the Women’s Addiction Services Leadership Institute (WASLI) Program (SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment), the national Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Developing Leadership in Reducing Substance Abuse (DLRSA) program, and the California Women's Leadership Project. She also coordinated the leadership development component of an ambitious 2.5-million-dollar USAID project designed to develop social work education and the field of social work in Vietnam.
